In May 2002, the possibility of moving an old pottery kiln from Escoriaza (Guipúzcoa) to the other side of the River Deba was considered. As this structure was considered to be a protected building, it was therefore entitled to special treatment according to the legislation enacted by the Basque Government regarding such matters.
The reason why relocation was taken under consideration lay in the construction of housing on the plot that accommodated the oven, and which was completely surrounded by buildings.
Once different options such as disassembling the oven and reassembling it in its new location, had been ruled out, the project for the relocation of the structure was
undertaken. Two possible solutions were contemplated: the use of wagons or the construction of a mobile gantry crane set on rails. The latter being the solution chosen.
A micropiled bedding was chosen for the structure itself, as it would allow the placement of a reinforced slab on the underside which would constitute the final foundation unit.
For the transportation of the kiln, a large pretensed upper slab was proposed, set at a slight vertical angle to assure cohesion between the block of the units, whence under movement.
