The masonry bridge over the Deba estuary (1866) is a special protection asset within the Camino de Santiago Monumental Complex. In July 2018 its central pier's foundations partially collapsed due to the teredos (shipworms) attack on the wooden piles. This fact triggered an emergency intervention to ensure the bridge's stability. FHECOR and INJELAN drew up the rehabilitation project in 2019. They are currently providing Construction Management works.
The central vaults have already been totally dismantled, and every rock piece (voussoir/ashlar) has been carefully named and stored for reconstruction. One of the four arch rings was mounted on the construction site area, close to the bridge. Two blocks of concrete tied with steel bars were used as abutments to resist the thrusts of the arch. Everything stayed in place when the scaffolding was taken down, so the test was successfully completed.
This trial assembly was a very important step in the learning process, for improving the reconstruction techniques and in understanding the behavior of this kind of bridges.
