The construction of the new Virilla River Bridge, in the National Route 32, in Costa Rica, has recently started. The Joint Venture FHECOR – Ginprosa was engaged by UNOPS to develop the construction project of the bridge. The Joint Venture ‘Virilla 32’, formed by Meco, Puentes Infraestructuras and Grupo Puentes, was awarded the construction works, with a $22.4 million budget.
The RN-32 between San José and Limón connects the capital of Costa Rica with its busiest port at the Caribbean Sea. San José northern single road carries over 34000 vehicles per day and demands a widening. Works start with the construction of the new bridge and the retrofitting of the existing one.
The new bridge will have a length of 285m, with 77+130+78 m spans. The deck will be constructed with a balanced cantilever method, excluding the southern side over the access streets to Saprissa stadium, in which a falsework will be used. The total width will be 14.30m, with a 1.50 m width sidewalk and three lanes of 3.60 m each. The design is highly conditioned by the seismicity of the area and the requisite of not including devices in order to decrease the maintenance costs.
