The Mayor, José María Álvarez del Manzano, the Minister of Public Works Francisco Álvarez Cascos and the President of the Comunidad de Madrid, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, inaugurated this evening the María de Molina Underpass, that will connect the Pº Castellana with the National II Highway in less than 3 minutes.
Through this tunnel, which is the most important road work constructed by the Madrid Council to date, will circulate more than 36,000 vehicles daily as from tomorrow, 9th May at 7:00. In order to avoid traffic jams, all the works needed to connect the new infrastructure with the National II highway exits, will be done during the night from Thursday to Friday.
The María de Molina Underpass, is 2,271m long, and is the longest urban tunnel in Spain. With two lanes in the exit direction, the tunnel starts at the López de Hoyos junction of the existing tunnel and it runs under this boulevard and once Velazquez Street is crossed, it crosses below Principe de Vergara Street and goes through the Prosperidad District until it reaches the National II highway.
