Refurbishment of the Hospital Universitario La Paz

Madrid, Spain

Structural typology: HOSPITALS
Date: December, 2031
Owner: SERMAS
Scope: refurbishment project and technical support
Architect: UTE Campo de Retamas

The La Paz University Hospital Complex includes the La Paz buildings, Carlos III Hospital, Cantoblanco Hospital, and the José Marvá, Peñagrande, and Colmenar Viejo Specialty Centers.

The site where the La Paz University Hospital renovation will take place is currently occupied by the existing hospital. The project involves demolishing over 175,000 m² of existing structures and constructing nearly 500,000 m² of new structures, which will be built in three phases.

Phase 1, the General Hospital, will consist of 5 underground basement levels, 22 above-ground floors, and a helipad. Phase 2, the Maternal and Child Hospital, will include 5 basement levels, partially allocated for parking, and 16 above-ground floors. In the northern part of this phase, building F will be constructed for outpatient and surgical areas, connected to the main body of Phase 2. Phase 3 will house non-hospital areas, such as the companion hotel, with 4 basement levels for parking and 10 above-ground floors. Additionally, within the La Paz Complex, new buildings will be added at Cantoblanco Hospital (8,000 m²), the new José Marvá Specialty Center will be built after demolishing the existing one (6,000 m²), and a new wing will be added to Carlos III Hospital (3,000 m²).

The goal of the project is to keep La Paz Hospital partially operational during the construction, maintaining the standards of the "Best Hospital in Spain," through a complex phased construction process that also considers the many existing services, including an underground Metro line.
