In May the reform of the arena in Mallorca Street will begin along with the installation of a retractable roof, by the company which placed the roof on the Madrilenian Vista Alegre Bullring. The budget is €17 million and the works will last 14 months.
The Tarragona Regional Government presented the integral reform and bullring roof Project yesterday, which is budgeted at €17.2 million. The Works will begin within two months and will last fourteen. The company Cor, which is in charge of the roof installation, is the same which covered the Vista Alegre Bullring, the center for the basketball games for Real Madrid (and until recently Estudiantes). The exterior of the Bullring will also undergo changes.
The President of the Regional Government, Joan Aregio, stated that the Project had a double objective in that it was to “generate a new area for cultural sporting events and to achieve returns on a building which is only used 20 days a year” Aregio classified the new building as the most important multi-use building in the capital.
The reform of the bullring will imply the urban redevelopment of the surroundings, the construction of two buildings in the place of the mews, the restoration of the façade and interior and the fitting out of new exits from the arena.
The most important and eye-catching intervention shall be the installation of a 92m diameter, 10m high retractable roof. The engineer and manager of the company Fhecor, Guillermo Corres, explained that the steel dome would be supported on 24 concrete columns “which will not affect the bullring structure as they are independent to the building” and will have a 40m diameter central opening ‘an operculum’ and will be crowned by a 10m glass skylight. These elements may be removed depending on the weather conditions to allow the entrance of sunlight.
Corres stated that the dome incorporated “the most advanced technology and gathers three important aspects which are; economy, aesthetics and technology”. He also underlined that ”the state of repair of the bullring surprised us as being one of the best we have seen to date”.
The manager of Fhecor mentioned examples of roof coverings executed by his company, such as the bullrings in Vista Alegre, Leon and Pontevedra. This engineer has amongst his clients, the named architects Rafael Moneo and Santiago Clatrava, and the companies Dragados Construcciones, Sacyr, ACS, Ferrovial-Agroman and Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas".
