The refurbishment of the Balaídos Stadium in Vigo includes the replacement of the existing roof with a new one. FHECOR has been entrusted to study the effect of the new roof on the existing structure of the Río Stand. This part of the stadium was built in 1981 after that the city of Vigo was selected as a venue for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. The current roof is a three-dimensional steel truss supported every 8,4 meters on two concrete columns located at the upper level of the frame structure of the stand.
The existing roof is going to be replaced with a spatial steel structure, which will support a new architectural skin that will cover the new roof as well as the façade. This change in roof layout involves a modification of the internal forces acting on the existing structure, which may require a reinforcement to resist these new actions.
